Former City Council Member Indicted on Child Molestation Charges in Rhode Island

Following the delivery of an indictment on Friday by the Providence County Grand Jury, Matthew Reilly, a former member of the Cranston City Council, is currently facing a number of counts related to the sexual abuse of children.

According to the Office of the Attorney General of Rhode Island, Reilly is facing charges of one crime of simple assault, two counts of first-degree child molestation, two counts of second-degree child molestation, one act of seduction of a minor child to engage in sexual conduct, and two instances of child molestation in the first degree.

Those who are being charged are accused of committing offenses that took place in Cranston on May 7th, 2023. In June of 2023, Reilly was brought into custody after the legal guardian of the victim, who was 12 years old at the time, made a complaint with the Cranston Police Department.

The alleged assault took place two weeks prior to Reilly’s arrest for drug possession, which took place after a law enforcement officer found him unconscious in his vehicle while carrying a glass pipe and a lighter inside of his hand.

The arraignment of Reilly is scheduled to take place on July 17 in the Superior Court of Providence County as reported by WPRI News.
