Tragic Loss: Ohio Couple Killed in Crash After Dropping Daughter at Summer Camp

Two Ohio families are in shock after a mother and her boyfriend were killed by a suspected drunk driver shortly after dropping off their daughter at summer camp in Kentucky earlier this month.

Meagan Spurgeon, 30, and her boyfriend Joshua Turza, 32, were murdered in a crash on June 9 when Kentucky State Police claim Jody Miller, 47, was driving drunk and collided with their car after a police chase.

“Our lives will never be the same,” Spurgeon’s family wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to help gather funds for her 7-year-old daughter.

Spurgeon was hailed by her family as a “beloved daughter, mother, and friend” who “was taken from us far too soon.”

“I don’t stop crying; I wake up crying,” Meagan’s mother, Darla Larson-Spurgeon, told local station Fox 8.

According to the outlet, Miller was thought to be driving at speeds of up to 150 mph when he collided with the Ohio couple’s automobile. According to a statement from Kentucky State Police, authorities spotted Miller driving his BMW at “excessive speeds” down Interstate 75 and sought to pursue him. Miller sped away from the troopers, who “lost sight of the vehicle and discontinued the pursuit,” according to the police statement.

The trooper who was initially chasing Miller ultimately arrived at the scene of the crash, where Spurgeon and Turza were pronounced dead.

“He was going so fast they couldn’t catch him, and the next thing that happened was her cell phone pinged that they’d been in a crash,” Spurgeon’s mother Darla told Fox 8, reportedly crying as she described the incident. “Officers arrived and the car was already totally engulfed in flames and there was nothing they could do.”

Miller was detained at the scene and charged with driving under the influence, vehicular homicide while intoxicated, endangering a police officer, evading police, and speeding, according to Kentucky State Police.

According to Fox 8, Miller is being held for $1 million in Grant County, Kentucky. Spurgeon’s relatives informed Fox 8 that the 30-year-old mother had recently finished from nursing school and accepted a position at the Cleveland Clinic. She recently purchased a home for herself and her little daughter, according to the outlet.

“Meagan adored her daughter more than anything else and was an amazing mom,” her obituary states. “She loved her job, her coworkers, and loved working as a registered nurse for CCF Lutheran Hospital.”
