On Thursday, authorities told reporters that a man who was 24 years old shot and killed his grandfather, who was 80 years old, and then went on to take his own life. This caused the New York state park to be evacuated and closed for several hours as the authorities looked for the culprit.
During a search that brought several law enforcement agencies along the Genesee River, Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters stated that Andrew Vahey, 24, passed away on a hiking route in Letchworth State Park as police officers closed in on him. It was during this search that Vahey was found.
Vahey was wanted for the shooting murder of his grandfather, Joseph Deponceau, which occurred earlier in the day. According to Peters, the body of Vahey’s grandfather was discovered in his house in Irondequoit by police who responded to a 911 call.
According to Peters, Vahey’s roommate reported to the police that he had received texts from Vahey declaring that he had just killed his grandfather and was now going to kill himself.
According to the chief, law enforcement authorities saw Vahey in the park holding a long gun at approximately 12:30 p.m. and attempted to make contact with him. However, Vahey instantly turned the gun on himself NBCNEWS.
The officers were called to Deponceau’s house last week following a family quarrel over parking on the grass, according to him. He stated that Vahey and Deponceau had battled previously about property.
